"It's what actually inspires other people, because they say, 'This person has the same problems I have, and even worse. They had all these issues and despite all that they were able to survive, succeed.' It drives you to do more.

In 2010, Next Jump, a 200-person e-commerce company in New York, had a problem. Every year, about 40 percent of its fleet of software developers turned over, lured away to Facebook or Google or any of a number of harebrained startups in the area. This is not a unique problem. In fact, it's on par with a lot of technology companies of Next Jump's size. Programmers are in high demand, and the Googles of the world can and will pay twice the going salary to get them. Eighteen months ago, however, Next Jump managed to decrease its turnover to 1 percent. Like, nobody is leaving. What's even crazier? 5,000 engineers now apply to work there every year.

"A lot of people make the mistake of being a slave to their calendar," says Charlie Kim, CEO of Next Jump, who recently helped me tackle my own calendar problem. A Calendar Slave, when he or she is asked for a meeting, sees an open slot, and books it. "Especially with external meetings, that's the worst," Kim says. But that's what most of us automatically do.
The key to reversing this requires a bit of simple proactivity, but most of us remain in reactive mode with our calendars, to our own chagrin at the end of the week when our to-do lists remain uncrossed.

Will Marre: "Last night I got a note from Charlie Kim, the amazing CEO of Next Jump. He told me that he had given 10,000 ft. of Manhattan office space in his building to a nonprofit called Summer Search. This nonprofit has 14 full-time employees who help find mentors and jobs for inner-city youth. These high school students come from terrible backgrounds with little support surrounded by crime. Summer Search’s graduates go on to college and graduate at an 85% success rate."

Will Marre: "Confidence balanced with humility can be a powerful strength. Without that balance I am just a jerk. The man who taught me this is Charlie Kim, the CEO of an unusual company named Next Jump. Next Jump is a New York City based ecommerce company that has set a new standard for recruiting and developing extraordinary employees. Charlie's engineers come from the Ivy League’s top schools. They are all smart. They brim with strengths. But Charlie found that without balance, a strength can make you useless. Not very many people in organizations seem to understand this today."

Next Jump CEO Charlie Kim, who recently partnered with LivingSocial to power daily deals across his commerce network, sees a shift in targeting from broadcasting deals to narrowcasting them. "Blasting out a deal to everyone in New York is not targeting," he says. "When you broadcast too much in any category, it is just a lot of noise. Email response rates have plummeted for everyone across the industry. What used to be 10% response rates even a year ago, now you are talking the 1% to 2% level." The constant barrage of emails from Groupon, LivingSocial, and every daily deal copycat is creating user fatigue that is visible in declining response rates.
